Understand What Your Offensive Opponent is Thinking

I’ve been in Cleveland at the Glazier Clinic over the last couple of days. I’m a defensive guy, but I have spent most of my clinic season this year watching offensive coaches. There are a few reasons for this.

If you’ve been coaching defense, coaching against defenses, or just an avid fan of any level of football, you already know that there isn’t much new that can be done on defense. You can align your guys in different spots, but ultimately defense is defense. Now obviously there are some nice little twists you can still learn, but for defenses coaches to really expand their knowledge, you will find the need to branch out and visit with the bad guys.To stop the opponent, it helps to have an understanding of what they are trying to do. That means understanding the goals and ideals of a team that runs the Inside Zone, or a Spread passing game, or a Wing-T. A good defensive coach needs to understand ALL of these offenses. Get inside the enemy’s head in order to stay one step ahead!
