The 6-2 Defense Shuts ‘Em Down on the Goal Line

The most popular front to use for your goal line defense is the 6-2 defense. But there are multiple ways to run a 6-2 defense. Since we are in the process of preparing our 2011 defense, I was doing some research. The 6-2 goal line defense presented in Ron Vanderlinden’s Football’s Eagle & Stack Defenses was one I really liked. The FrontIt is important to use a goal line package that fits your base defensive scheme. You probably will not have a lot of practice time to work it. Vanderlinden points out that it only makes up about 10% of the snaps you have in a season, if that much.

Since we are a 4-3 Defense, the 6-2 fits perfectly. It is also an even front. With the 4-2-5 Defense you can just walk up the Outside Linebackers.

Goal Line Defense

This front is balanced. We will start against a double tight formation with 22 personnel, meaning 2 backs and 2 tight ends, with one split receiver. The Tackles are lined up in a 2i technique, inside shade of the Guards. The Defensive Ends are in their normal 5 technique, outside shade of the Offensive Tackles. They are aligned heavier than normal. Instead of the tilt they play in the Over front, they are aligned tight to the Tackles with less tilt.
