Inside the TCU Defensive Playbook: Coaching TCU Cover 2

The coverage package that has become so famous for Texas Christian over the past decade has always baffled me. The truth is, this is not a wildly complicated package (at least the base coverages), but the terminology is like a series of code words.

There are plenty of people who understand the coverage better than I do, but part of the reason I write these articles is so that I can work through ideas myself. And that is what will be happening here.

I pulled up the TCU Defensive Playbook (the coverage and blitz packages, anyway) that I had seen all over the internet in the past. Click here to see it on Scribd.

Let me rant, first. This playbook is supposed to be from 1999. I have my 1999 defensive playbook from Randolph-Macon College sitting on the shelf over here, and it is much nicer and cleaner. Still hand drawn, for sure. But on some nice R-MC stationary. Pretty sure TCU had a little more of a playbook budget at the time, too. Sorry, this is trivial, but I take time to make my playbooks look nice… moving on.

We will start off my looking at Cover 2 in the package, which is a Robber coverage where the Corners have the deep half and the Free Safety is robbing to the passing strength.
