Continuing on with the Quarters Coverage that we ran this past season, I want to talk about our first check. Again, in the Quarters Coverage we have a 4-spoke secondary. When “Quarters” is called, the coverage is still not really set. We know it will be some version of Quarters, but there are any number of checks. We may carry only 2 or 3 checks into a game, or we may use as many as 6 checks within a single game. The “Read” Check is used for 1-receiver removed, meaning there is one receiver detached from the end man on the line of scrimmage (EMOLS). If there are no receivers removed, we may use Read, but could also use an “Invert” check.
