Linebacker Reads and Changing Backfields

If the world were perfect, I think we would all read backfields with our linebackers. But the more I think about it, the more I wonder if this is the best solution.

Against the I-Formation, you cannot go wrong with reading the backfield. Even with a split-backfield and the Quarterback under center, I don’t think there is a better way to do things. But we all see different formations from everywhere. If you’re a high school coach, you probably have at least one Wing-T team on the schedule. You probably have a team that runs I-Formations. And you have the Spread and the Pistol. And maybe a Split-back Veer, just for good measure. So how do we handle it? Cross-read the Wing-T? The whole design of the offense is to get your guys confused by misdirection, and our solution is to read a guy on the other side of the field? Tough. Not to mention, if they’re good they’ve got a key breaker for you. Then we see a Gun Split-Back team, running the option. Cross read the backs… but the Quarterback is a back, who’s reading him? We’re getting a lot happening, and we might be in Week 3 at this point.
