There are two types of Defensive Backs that we use in a football defense. It can be easy to get confused about where a particular type of player should go, and the qualifications for each position. In most defenses, there are Cornerbacks (usually two) and one or two Safeties. In some defenses created to defend wide open, Spread-style offenses, you will find numerous other Defensive Backs. These can include a Nickel DB, or a hybrid Linebacker/Safety position called a Spur or Bandit. When deciding on who plays where, you need to decide on who will be playing your Safety position(s) first. Now, of course, it depends on the type of defense you have decided to run as to the style of player you’re looking for. They may be asked to be an extra linebacker in the box on some players, or they may always be playing 12-15 yards off the ball and truly be the “last resort.” In any case, your safety must be aggressive. He needs to be a confident player. He should be a sure tackler. Your safety should have good speed, with excellent speed being a bonus but not a requirement. Instead, it is more important to have someone who takes good angles to the football, and has some natural instincts. If you’ll be asking your safety to make calls and checks on the field, be sure to take this into consideration as well and look for someone with leadership capabilities to fill your safety position(s).
