Over the past several years I have purchased a lot of books about football. Some have been good, some have been completely worthless, and most have been just…well, okay. In terms of defensive books, what is out there and available is woefully limited.
In terms of a basic, general book on Football Defenses, you can’t beat AFCA Defensive Football Strategies. Just a great resource for all types of football defenses. Everything from the 5-2 to the 4-3, the Junkyard Eight, and everything in between. There are ideas on how to set up run and pass defense in general, along with how to defend different areas of the field. You can really use it to help you build your own defense, rather than just taking some defense out of a book and using it as your playbook. Combine different elements from the different articles. Now keep in mind that most of the articles are older, and you’ll have to adapt anything in here to today’s Spread Offenses. But there are tons of great fronts, ideas for adjustments to your base, anything. A must-have.I would also say that AFCA Offensive Football Strategies makes a great partner to the AFCA Defensive Football Strategies. Why? Any offense you’ve got to defend, you can look it up in here and get some idea of what their basic philosophy is. Wing-T, I-Formation, Option, Spread… if you can understand what they’re doing, you can better defend it. Its a lot cheaper to get this book (under $9 used), than buy a book or video on every offense you’ll see this season. Again, it may not go into some of the extreme Spread Offensive schemes that we see so much of, bbut it gives you a little bit of everything.
