If you are a cornerback coach, you have a good idea of what is necessary to make a great one. You’ve seen that a certain type of player can become that lock-down guy on any receiver. But if all you have considered is the size and speed of that cornerback, you are missing a major part of his game. To develop a great cornerback, the coach needs to develop the player not only physically, but mentally as well. Here are four key components of the mental make-up of a great cornerback. You may have noticed these in your best players in the past, but if you have not then you will no doubt realize that the best cornerbacks you’ve coached all had these qualities.1. Confidence: Perhaps cocky better describes the mentality we are searching for. Find a guy who has a swagger to him. Maybe he talks a lot, maybe he is quiet. But he has an undeniable air about him. He wants the Quarterback to throw the ball at him. He loves the challenge of matching up with the top receivers every day. In 1 on 1 drills in practice, he looks to cover your best. He wants the challenge, and more times than not, he wins that challenge.
