Coaching Man Coverage Technique for Linebackers

Our 4-3 Defense is normally run with a Zone Coverage behind it (Quarters), but we do run some man coverage. Unlike typical 8-Man fronts like the 4-2-5 or the 3-5-3 Defense, where the players who are going to be locked down on slot receivers are your hybrid players, we have to use Linebackers to cover down on slot receivers.

While our Sam and Will Linebacker are hardly a “plugger” type of Linebacker, they do not spend much time working on man coverage. So we wanted a quick and easy way to teach the technique. [Read more...]

Keying the Quarterback against the Wing-T

The number of ways that teams have come up with to key the Wing-T is impressive. And at some point, I think I have tried most of them.

To be fair, we do not see much of this great and…er, antiquated… Offense. Now I love the Wing-T, I’ve just never run it and haven’t coached against it too much. I believe that he principles of the Wing-T are in almost every offense though, and if you are not studying the principles of the offense, you are not trying to understand your opponents.

And in studying it, I am always looking for the right way to defend it. You need to identify what Wing-T play series they like best, what play calls they like best, etc. I talked about defending the Wing-T in Episode 6 of The Football Coaching Podcast with my co-host Nate Albaugh, so if you are looking or more general details on defending the Wing-T, give that a listen.

In this article, however, we look at one very specific read – the Quarterback. [Read more...]

Teaching Linebacker to Read Offensive Line Keys in the 4-3 Defense

I have talked recently about making changes in our reads for the Linebackers in our 4-3 Defense. After sitting down and really studying what we want, I have developed the reads and a drill for the reads. I can’t show any video of the drill until we learn to do it right, but I really think it will help our backers make decisions quickly.

In the 4-3 Defense as I presented it in Coaching Football’s 4-3 Over Defensive Front we taught backfield reads, so the starting point was knowing where we wanted them to go based on those backfield keys. Why the switch? We were having a horrible time of seeing backs, and keying what they were doing. In addition, play action was really sucking us up.

So in changed to reading the Offensive Line, we needed to match up what the uncovered Offensive Lineman nearest to the Linebacker would do, and how that would translate to where the ball is headed. [Read more...]

Get Linebackers Moving Downhill: In-At-Out Drill for Linebackers

Today we were able to get outside and work some of our Linebacker Drills. I’m using my new Sony Bloggie Touch Camera to film drills during practice now and will be able to upload them occasionally.

This drill is called In-At-Out, which I took from someone, somewhere several years ago. We get our players moving downhill fast with this drill and get a lot done in just a few minutes. This is one of our Every Day Drills.

Coaching Linebacker Keys in the 4-3 Defense

I have been putting a lot of thought into our Linebacker reads in the 4-3 Defense. Since 2008 I have preferred to read backs because of the speed I thought our linebackers could get the reads.

However, the idea of teaching just a back read leaves a lot to be desired. We make too many mistakes and miss too many pullers. At some point in almost every season since 2009, we have taught Guard reads in some respect to someone on the defense.

It has not always been to everyone, or in every game or every situation. But I have felt a need for reading uncovered linemen. Last season, we ended up with both Outside Linebackers focusing on reading a 2-man surface (Tackle & Tight End for the Sam or Tackle & Guard for the Will), while the Mike continued reading the back.

Now, I’d like to transition completely to reading Offensive Linemen as the primary key, with Back flow as a secondary key. There has been some internal struggle, but I think we are getting closer. [Read more...]
