Leadership in Sports: Does Your Team Have What it Takes?

I recently surveyed all of our subscribers to Football-Defense.com with two simple questions.

  1. What was your team’s biggest problem?
  2. What will it take to fix it?

There was a huge variety of answers. Since we have everything from midget football coaches (I don’t know the correct term, but some of the kids are 5 year olds) to NFL coaches that visit the site, that is to be expected.Surprisingly few coaches are concerned with scheme. I like to think that is because more coaches have been involved in this site and others like it, and are more confident in their scheme today. We will continue to talk scheme, of course – but there were bigger concerns: [Read more...]

5 Football Coaching Phrases We Don’t Say Enough

“You gotta wrap up!”

“The low man wins!”

“Be an Athlete!”

“Catch the #^*%ing BALL!”

We have a lot of thing say. By the time our kids have been playing for a couple of years, they are immune to this sort of thing. They will listen to coaching, of course. How does it happen when you start with a group so seemingly hopeless? If you haven’t had the good fortune to lay in bed wondering about this, you can keep reading just to find out how the other half lives! Is Your Football Film Session a Waste of Time?

The lights are low. Your players are scattered around, some are in chairs, some are on the floor. They’ve been sitting in classes since 8am, and now its 3pm and they’re sitting again, watching next week’s opponent.

You’ve got the remote. A few assistants are scattered around the room. You are narrating the film like Ben Stein, while your assistants chime in with occasional comments. The players rarely say anything, except an outburst over a big hit. Can’t you do better than this? I know you had to live through it and they should too. But are you using the limited football film study time that we have as wisely as you can? [Read more...]
