Using the Alert Check in Quarters Coverage

We have spent a lot of time looking at the Quarters Coverage on this blog. I love this coverage for any 7-man front, like the 4-3 Defense or the 3-4 Defense.

The Alert Check is the coverage check we use in Quarters versus two receivers removed. We have to make some adjustments in order to handle the threat of two fast, vertical threats. This video details the check.

Learn more about this details of Quarters Coverage and other checks we use in this video.

Running the Double Eagle Flex Defense

Taking a look at the Double Eagle Flex Defense! One of the most innovative defenses in a long time, the “Desert Swarm” turned things around at The University of Arizona a few years back.

You do not see much of this defense today, so if you can run it effectively the chances are that your opponent has not seen it either!

Football-Defense Mailbag #3

Before the questions…

As I mentioned to our subscribers today, our staff has made the switch to Hudl for our video editing. While we are working on the Trial period right now, we are nearing the end of our first 30 Days and love it. Not only can the entire staff help break down film (before, we had three computers that could be used for breakdown – now anyone can do it from anywhere), but the kids can watch the film at home. We can even telestrate, add notes, and narrate a play and then notify the kids who need to see it by e-mail.Hudl has a lot of options, right now we’re looking at the lowest package, and it seems like it will fit our needs just fine. There are also packages for Youth coaches as well. If you want to give Hudl a try you can get a 30 Day free trial at Hudl.com, and if you use the Promo Code: joedaniel you’ll get 10% off when you make your purchase. [Read more...]

Defend the Midline Option with the 4-3 Defense

I just answered an e-mail and decided I should skip right over waiting for the Mailbag and get this one up.

What’s your take on defending the mid-line using the miami style 4-3? If you are facing a team that’ll give you a diet of it, do you go to the under front?

Thanks,

sb

Coach,

If you are choosing a defense to defend the option, the 4-3 Defense is a great choice. I like both the Over and Under, for different reasons, against the Midline. [Read more...]

How to Wrong Arm a Trap Block

I have had a few questions since Coaching Football’s 4-2-5 Defense eBook came out about the proper way to wrong arm a trap block. I have talked about this before, but wanted to add a little video to illustrate the idea.

The wrong arm is the most effective way to defend against trap blocks. The defensive linemen are bending down the line of scrimmage when they are unblocked, rather than getting up field and getting kicked out by an on-coming trap blocker.

The wrong arm refers to taking the defender’s outside arm and ripping through the upfield shoulder of the trap blocker or kick-out (if it is a fullback).
