Blocking the 3-5-3 Defense

I wanted to revisit the 3-5-3 Defense to talk about another advantage of it. That advantage is in the opponent’s offensive line learning to block all of those slanters and blitzing backers. Now, any good Offensive Line coach will probably tell you that blocking the Odd Stack is no problem. Zone guys, especially, will tell you that they don’t have to do anything special to take care of any defense. Their rules cover everything. I’m sure the Wing-T guys will tell you that, too. They’ve got rules – gap, down, backer… just follow the rules.I’m not disputing it. I don’t coach Offensive Line… I have coached the line on JV teams before, but thats as far as my knowledge goes. But what I do know, is that most teams are seeing even front defenses. In addition, they’re playing against teams that blitz sparingly, maybe 30% on average. No question, there are 4-2-5 and 4-3 defenses that blitz a lot, but there are a lot that don’t. In preparing for playing the 3-5-3, a team has to spend its entire week preparing to pick up whoever happens to show up in the gap.
