Recent buyers of my eBook on Installing Football’s 4-3 Defense also received several short videos, one of which was on defending the Zone Read. There are as many ways to defend this play as there are defensive play calls. After speaking with other coaches, I have settled on the idea that you need 3 different ways to attack the Zone Read.Why 3 ways? Four may be too many for your kids, and 2 is not enough. Same reason I suggest carrying 3 zone blitzes into a game.Base Front
In our base 4-3 Defense, we will attack the Zone Read in a traditional manner. We want the 3-technique Tackle aligned to the side opposite the running back. This means that the zone read is going to be coming at our weak side end and Will linebacker, which we like to be two of the most athletic players on the defense.
