Here’s an e-mail question I got the other day. Interesting question that we do not think about all of the time – why does the 4-3 Over Defense line up the way they do? My response is completely shooting from the hip, thinking more about why I continue to line them up that way rather than why Jimmy Johnson lined them up that way.
Joe,Thank you for being willing to devote so much time to the betterment of others. In that same vain why does the 4-3 Over line up the way it does?Happy Holidays!

I’m sure everyone has different reasons, but here’s my thought process on the whole thing:
The Ends are on the end, tilted, so that they can play fast and spill the football. Plus, the two positions are interchangeable.
The Tackles are in a 3 and a 1, tilted for a couple of reasons. Because they are outside shade of their man, the positions are nearly interchangeable with the Defensive Ends. The 3 Tech is the most important position against teams with a TE because he can squeeze A Gap with the body of the guard while filling B Gap with his own. That’s why he’s the biggest beast on your DL.The Linebackers are where they are because of where the DL is and where they have to go. The Mike stacks behind the weak side Nose so that he can play strong A Gap or weak B Gap. The nose can make his life much easier because if he demands a double team, the Mike is almost free running. The Sam has strong C Gap so he lines up out there. He has cut-back A Gap, so the position of the 3-Tech who must demand a double team, allows the Sam to cover all that ground on flow away from him.
